Using ATMs and foreign cards in Ethiopia.

International-card acceptance exists but is not universal. Know which network the ATM accepts, check every fee and keep cash as a backup outside major locations.

01

Where foreign cards may work

Major-bank ATMs in Addis Ababa and other larger cities are the most likely option. Bank of Abyssinia states that its ATMs accept Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay. Ethiopian Airlines also reports bank counters and ATMs in the Bole International Airport arrivals hall. Acceptance at one bank or location does not guarantee acceptance everywhere.

02

Before using an ATM

  • Check that the displayed card-network logo matches your card.
  • Use an ATM attached to a bank branch or in a controlled location when possible.
  • Confirm your issuer’s daily limit, foreign transaction fee and cash-advance treatment.
  • Have a second card and some exchanged cash available.

03

At the machine

  • Review the amount and every displayed operator fee before confirming.
  • If offered a conversion into your home currency, compare it carefully with charging in Ethiopian birr; the offered conversion can include an additional markup.
  • Shield your PIN, take the receipt and check the account notification.
  • If the ATM retains your card, contact the operating bank immediately.

04

Paying merchants by card

Card acceptance is concentrated among larger hotels, airlines and established merchants. NBE states that only licensed entities may accept foreign-currency cash notes or foreign debit and credit cards for goods and services in Ethiopia. Ask whether the final charge will be in ETB and review the terminal amount before entering your PIN.

05

If a transaction fails

  • Do not repeat the same withdrawal many times if the account shows pending authorizations.
  • Try a different established bank network or a staffed branch.
  • Keep the ATM location, time and receipt details for any dispute.
  • Contact the card issuer promptly for an unexplained debit or blocked card.
