01

Before arrival

  • Tell your card issuer you are traveling and confirm foreign transaction and ATM fees.
  • Carry more than one payment method and store them separately.
  • Check the latest NBE and airline notice immediately before travel because cash limits can change.

02

Cash declarations and Birr limits

Published NBE guidance requires a customs declaration when foreign currency exceeds USD 10,000 or its equivalent. It also states that a person entering or departing may hold up to ETB 3,000, increased to ETB 10,000 for travel to or from Djibouti or other neighboring port cities. Confirm these unusual limits before travel.

03

How long foreign currency may be held

NBE distinguishes residents, non-resident Ethiopians or people of Ethiopian origin, and non-resident foreigners. Published guidance generally requires residents to convert or deposit carried foreign currency within 30 days; non-resident Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian origin have separate 90-day rules, while non-resident foreigners may hold foreign currency during the validity of their visa.

04

Exchanging money safely

  • Use an authorized bank or licensed foreign-exchange bureau.
  • Compare the bank buying rate—the bank is buying your foreign currency.
  • Ask about commissions before handing over cash.
  • Count the Birr before leaving and retain the exchange receipt for your records.

05

Before departure

  • Review the current Birr and foreign-currency carrying limits.
  • Keep exchange, withdrawal and declaration documents.
  • Allow time to resolve unused Birr through an authorized provider rather than waiting until boarding.
